Book Playlist: MADNESS | The Unbecoming Of Mara Dyer

Even though books and music are two very different spectrums for me, I occasionally come across a song whose lyrics, melody or just the music reminds me of a book, a character or a plot. So, I’ve decided to introduce a new segment to wordhaven- Book Playlist, where every week or so, I’ll create a playlist for a book with songs that rock the same vibes as the book.

To kick this off, I’ve prepared a playlist for The Unbecoming Of Mara Dyer– or the trilogy as a whole, if you will. I absolutely love this book, the characters (Noah is literally my No. 1 book boyfriend these days), the writing, the plot and the themes of mental illness, insanity, madness mixed with magical realism.

Here’s a cool fact for you: I’ve named this playlist MADNESS because when you join Mara and Noah’s initials- Mara Amitra Dyer & Noah Eliot Simon Shaw- the word MADNESS is formed. All hail, Queen Hodkin.

“There,” he said as he finished tying the laces on my left shoe. “Now you won’t fall.”
  Too late.

Gasoline // Halsey

Let’s Hurt Tonight // OneRepublic

Monsters // Ruelle

Sick Of Losing Soulmates // dodie

Control // Halsey

Hallelujah // Pentatonix (cover)

If you’ve read the books, you’d know why Gasoline and Control are literally the perfect Mara Dyer songs. Let’s Hurt Tonight has these intense romantic vibes to it that can only be best described as Noah and Mara’s relationship. Sick Of Losing Soulmates is actually a very un-Mara like song but it sums up the ending of The Becoming Of Noah Shaw very well. Also, I added Hallelujah because, weirdly, that song is very Mara-Noah; if fact, in the first book, Mara discovers this song on Noah’s playlist and realizes they have similar taste in music.

So, that’s it! Book Playlist isn’t necessarily a tag but I’m just gonna tag a few of my blogger buds in any case, if you’d like to do it! Just pick any book that you want and dedicate it a few songs. ❤

  1. omg thank you so much for the tag!! ❤ ❤ ❤ Sometimes I read with music and sometimes I don't, but when music really vibes with a book I'm reading then those songs are forever reserved for that book/series and it adds this whole other element to my reading that I LOVE. Admittedly there are only, like, two series this has ever happened with, but it'll be fun picking songs to go with some of my favs! Also, I haven't read the Mara Dyer series yet but it seems like something I would love SO MUCH and I really wanna pick it up.

    1. Hahah SAME. It’s so random when you’re listening to a song and BANG! You’re reminded of that one book that you read. 😂😂
I can’t wait to see your answers too, if you decide to do the tag! (Also, definitely give Mara Dyer a try; Noah will completely win your heart :D).

  2. HEY!

I don’t know why I never saw that you’d tagged me, but this is awesome!

OMG that quote is like the best and the MADNESS thing??? I need these books! Now! Why did I swear an oath not to buy any books this month? This is obviously an emergency and I’m allowed to put that oath on hold, yeah? Also I kinda need to buy the sequel to The Winner’s Curse anyway, and by ‘need’ I mean THAT I’M GOING CRAZY WITHOUT IT IN MY HANDS.

Ahh! Can’t wait to pick my book and songs!! 😀

    1. Oh my god, this actually made me laugh out loud. Hey, ANY oath regarding not buying books can be held off in times of emergency. So, yes, go ahead and buy these books because you won’t regret it!! ❤ (And can't wait to see your song selection!).
